2005 - Our first year

These are the events that took place during 2005. We include them here both for memories' sake and so that enquirers can get an idea of the type of events which The WASC undertakes.

APRIL

Indoor Climbing in Swindon
Friday 15 April - depart 5.30pm at 78 Portway, cost of transport £3 a head.

Climbing in Vallis
Sunday 24 April - depart 10am at 78 Portway, cost of transport £1 a head.

Fred's Ballistic Day
Sat 30 April at 10am Fred's Farm, Sandhill Farm, Longbridge Deverill, Warminster. Go to Longbridge Dev, turn left at BP garage go about 400m to X roads with white house on right. Turn left and take next and only major turning right. Call the Meads on 840655. We have spoken to Fred's Dad and to do clay pidgeon shooting we need shotgun certificates so that's basically out for everyone except Rupert. What we can have is tree climbing, airgun/rifle shooting, archery, zip wire and Fred's bouldering wall. If you want a lift from Warminster Bill will be leaving at about 9.45am and the cost is free.

MAY

Vallis Climbing
Friday 6 May - depart 78 Portway at 5pm, cost of transport £1 a head.

Go Caving with Michael Haworth
Saturday 21 May - depart 78 Portway at 5pm, cost of transport £2.50 a head. Make sure you bring: helmet, headlamp, wellies, preferably with steel toecaps and overalls or clothes that you do not mind getting very dirty and can be removed before getting back into the car.

JUNE

Kids Day in Vallis
Friday 3 June - meet at Vallis at 10.30am, car will leave 78 Portway at c.10am if you want a lift, £1 a head. Bring snacks, BBQ, etc.

Go Canoeing with Darren Oram
Saturday 11 June - depart 78 Portway at 9am and head for Bradford on Avon, bring sandwiches/refreshments. Clothes you don't mind getting wet. Cost of transport £1 a head.

Club Meeting
Monday 20 June at 7pm at 78 Portway.

Climbing in Vallis
Friday 24 June - depart 78 Portway at 5pm, cost of transport £1 a head.

JULY

Survival Weekend
Friday 1 July through till Sunday 3 July. Meet at Burnbake Woods on Pertwood Farm at 5.30pm on Friday for bivvy making, etc. Bring own food if you feel less confident about catching some.

Voyage under Warminster with Jacques Fryeur
Saturday 2 July at 10am at 78 Portway. Bill needs to do a cursory inspection to find out which end is best to enter the underground world of Warminster.

Climbing in Vallis
Friday 8 July - depart 78 Portway at 5pm, cost of transport £1 a head.

Sport Climbing in Portland
Saturday 16 July to Sunday 17 July. Depart 78 Portway at 5pm. The idea here is we camp out overnight and spend Sunday climbing on the beautiful bolted routes of Portland. Obviously you need to bring your own camping equipment and food. Cost of transport is £4.50 a head.

AUGUST

Deep Water Soloing Day
7 August near Swanage. This will be taking out a RIB and speeding to a cliff face from where we will climb. No gear needed, if you fall off you fall straight into the water. Departure time depends on tides, may be early - possible camp overnight.

Climbing in Vallis or Holcombe
28 August, depart 78 Portway at 10am. This will be a serious climbing day at either quarry depending on the decision of those participating.

SEPTEMBER

Wilderness Gathering Visit
Saturday 3 September. The Wilderness Gathering is a survival/outdoors fair based near East Knoyle. Members will be visiting en masse at some point during the weekend - probably Saturday. Those interested should contact secretary@thewasc.org. For more details visit www.wildernessgathering.co.uk.

Club Meeting
Monday 5 September at 7pm at 78 Portway. Come along, new members welcome.

Kayak Day
Saturday 3 September 10am - 2pm at Bradford on Avon Canoe Club, lead by Darren Oram.

Sunday 18 September - Swildon's Sump
Go down a wet, muddy hole in the Mendips. Depart from 78 Portway at 10.30am. Lead by Colin Charles. Not for kids.

Saturday 24 September - Holcombe Climb & Mountain Biking Day
Climbing and biking at Holcombe Quarry in the Mendips. Kids welcome. Depart from 78 Portway at 10am.

Friday 30 September - 1* Canoeing first part
First part of BCU 1 Star canoing award. Lead by Darren Oram (our Chairman). Starts 4pm at BoA canoe club. Kids welcome.

OCTOBER

Friday 7 October - Swilden's Lite
Down Swilden's again but this time not the sump. A two hour expedition primarily designed for kids. Wet and muddy but not a full submersion. Lead by Michael Haworth. Depart 78 Portway at 5pm.

Friday 14 October 2005 - 1* Canoeing second part
Second part of the BCU 1 star canoeing award. Starts at 4pm at BoA canoe club. Kids welcome.

Sunday 23 October - 15 miles of MTB
Fifteen gruelling miles of hardcore mountain biking lead by new member Tom Maddocks. Including "the bombholes". Suitable for older kids able to endure a 15 mile ride on hardpack/some mud. Depart 78 Portway at 1pm. Able to be completed on a hybrid.

Friday 28 October - Bristol Climbing Centre
Back indoors to work on technique. Kids welcome. Depart 78 Portway at 5pm.

NOVEMBER

Saturday 5 November - Shooting & Fireworks at Fred's

More crazy fun down on Fred's farm, Sandhill Farm, Longbridge Deverill, Warminster. Controllable kids welcome. Biathlon shooting competition. 2pm at Fred's Farm in Longbridge Deverill.

Friday 11 November - Swindon Climbing Centre
More "technique" in Swinny. Depart 78 Portway at 5pm.

Sunday 20 November - Tree Climbing at Fred's
Back down to Fred's farm but this time technical tree-climbing lead by IRATA level 2 Kevin Drake. Learn how to climb a tree by shimmying up a rope. 1pm at Fred's Farm. Controllable kids welcome; this is likely to be a serious lesson.

Monday 28 November - Club Meeting
7pm at 78 Portway. Regular meeting.

DECEMBER

Saturday 3 December - Snowboarding
At Avon Ski Centre www.highaction.co.uk If we have a group of 8 it costs about £10 a head with instruction. Darren says it will take about four lessons to learn how to do it. So do not expect to be able to come away able to snowboard. Darren Oram to lead expedition.

Friday 9 December - Bristol Climbing Centre
Get down and give me twenty. Depart 78 Portway at 5pm.

Saturday 17 December - The WASC Xmas Social
6pm at 78 Portway. Weather permitting lots of adrenaline and testosterone-fuelled activities including chilli eating competiton, Russian Egg Roulette, knife fighting and arm wrestling with adders.

Tuesday 27 December - Serious Caving
Assemble at 9.30am at 78 Portway for a serious five hour round trip down Swildon's Hole, during which we will be going through three sumps including one consisting of liquified mud.

Friday 30 December - Abseil & Climb at Vallis
Abseiling, Rap Jumping (forward rappell) and winter climbing in that old favourite Vallis Vale. Assemble 10am at 78 Portway.
