2008 - The year the membership took over

These are the events that took place in 2008. We leave them here both for memories' sake and so that prospective members can get an idea of the kind of events organised by WASC members.

January - 2008

Sat 12 Jan till Sat 16 Feb - every Saturday for six weeks - 1* & 2* Kayak course
This will take place at the Kingdown swimming pool every Saturday evening 5-6pm. The objective is to get as many people as possible through their 1* or 2* BCU Kayak/Canoe course. Meet at Warminster Sports Centre, Kingdown School. Arrive at 4.45pm prompt.

Wed 16 January - WASC Meeting
Regular Club meeting at 7.30pm at 78 Portway.

Friday 25 January - Hardcore Caving Trip
This will be a cold wet, tiring experience for people who have already done one or two trips or are fairly competent in a cave. Somewhere in the Mendips. Leave 78 Portway at 6.15pm.

February

Friday 8 February - Junior/Intermediate Caving
This will be a caving session that is suitable for children and adults who are fairly new to caving. Meet 78 Portway at 6.15pm. Bring wellies.

Wednesday 20 February - River Frome Kayak Trip
This will be a trip on the River Frome from Beckington to Farleigh Hungerford. It's about 5-6 miles by kayak and there are a similar number of weirs - most of which you can walk around if you want to. This trip is not suitable for the complete novice but anyone who is 1* standard or above should be able to complete this. Leave 7 Gipsy Lane, Warminster, Darren's house, at 9.30am.

Friday 22 February - Indoor Climbing Swindon
It's half term - head for Swindon Climbing Centre and go climbing. Leave 78 Portway at 1.30pm.

Friday 29 February - Indoor Climbing Bristol
Bristol Climbing Centre holds a "technique and movement" course every last Friday of the month. It is an opportunity to be coached in climbing technique. You need to contact the Bristol Climbing Centre on 0117 941 3489 to book the course. You could always just go along to climb. Leave 78 Portway at 6.30pm.

March

Saturday 8 March - Ballistics Day
Guns, fire and anything else we can lay our hands on. Politically incorrect but who cares. In a field near Bath. Bring snacks. Leave 78 Portway, Warminster at 10am.

Saturday 15 March - MTB Muckaround
Meet at Heaven's Gate car park at 1.30pm. This is a family-friendly mountainbiking session in the Longleat forest.

Sunday 16 March - Visit to The Outdoors Show
A great place for gear-fiends. Lots of last minute show deals and all the latest kit on display. Leave 78 Portway at 8am.

Monday 17 March - WASC Meeting
Regular Club meeting at 7.30pm at 78 Portway.

Monday 24 March - Climbing
Either head outside to Vallis Vale if it is warm or up to Swindon if it's cold Meet at Darren's house, 7 Gipsey Lane, Warminster at 1.30pm.

Saturday 29 March - Extreme Easter Egg Hunt
Kicks off with lots of team based games like Dodgeball, Fox & Hounds, etc. Culminates in an Easter Egg hunt for kids of all ages. Great fun for kids. Meet at 78 Portway at 2pm. Bring something nice to eat or drink for afternoon tea.

April

Friday 11 April - Beginner/Intermediate Caving
This will be a caving session that is suitable for children and adults who are new to caving. It will probably be to one of the Burrington Combe caves. Meet 78 Portway at 6.15pm. Bring wellies.

Friday 18 April - Climbing
Regular climbing session either at Swindon or another venue. Leave 78 Portway at 6.15pm .

Friday 25 April - Beginner/Intermediate Caving
This will be a wet session in a cave with a streamway like Swildon's Hole. Prepare to get wet and knackered. Leave 78 Portway at 6.15pm. Bring wellies.

Saturday 26 April - 1* Kayak Instruction
Max of 8 people, meet at Kingdown pool at 4.45pm. Runs until 7pm. Cost is £24 for pool hire per person for this session and the next one. People need to make sure they commit to the full course (both sessions). Final assessment will take place on the R. Avon in the ensuing weeks.

May

Saturday 3 May - 1* Kayak instruction continued
This is the second half of the course above.

Saturday 10, 17, 24 & 31 May - Kayaking on R.Avon at Bradford on Avon
This will start at 5.30pm the R. Avon at Bradford on Avon and continue until light fails. The aim will be general kayak fun and to get as many as possible through their 1*.

Sunday 11 May - Gliding

A flight in a high performance glider with Dave Tanner in the cockpit in charge. Something of a chance of a lifetime for a lot of people. Details nearer the time.

June

Sat/Sun 7/8 June - Climbing Weekend in Wye Valley
Head off to the Wye valley for a weekend of climbing and camping. Leaving location and time TBA.

Sat/Sun 21/22 June - Wye Valley Kayak Weekend
Head off to the Wye Valley for a two day kayak trip on the River Wye. Leaving location and time TBA.

Sat 28 June - Ballistics Day
More fun with guns in a field near Bath. Leave 78 Portway at 10am. Bring guns.

July

Saturday 5 July - Orienteering & BBQ
Meet at the Tanner's house at 20A Westbury Rd. Gather at 2pm and set off on an orienteering exercise in the nearby woods. Then head back for a BBQ kicking off at 5pm.

Monday 7 July - Regular WASC meeting AGM
Regular club meeting at 7.30pm at 78 Portway.

Friday 18 July - Zipwire
Leave 78 Portway, Warminster at 6.15pm and travel to an undisclosed location for zipwire fun. Bring wetsuits and crappy trainers you don't mind getting wet.

Saturday 26 July - Vallis Climbing Day
Either leave 78 Portway at 9am and go to Vallis Vale or see you there at Vallis from about 9.30am onwards. This event will be more a general intro to rock climbing type.

August

Friday 1 August - Rock climbing evening
The idea for this event is that it is a skills learning exercise primarily for adults. Leave 78 Portway at 6pm or be at Vallis at 6.30pm.

Saturday 2 August - Orienteering
Based in the Longleat woods a chance to run around and find different locations using a map and compass. Details TBA.

Weekend 29-31 August - Watersports Weekend in Wareham/Dorset Area
Book yoursleves into a suitable campsite or similar and spend time kayaking, possibly climbing on Sat and - deep water soloing (DWS if you're cool) on Sunday. Rupert will be taking his RIB (rigid inflatable boat - takes about 6 people). Kayaks are probably limited to 10 on this trip so please book your place for this and for DWS with secretary to avoid disappointment.

September

Saturday 6 September - Orienteering
A fun afternoon for families as well as keen 'fitties' in the hills around Warminster, followed by BBQ to rack up all those lost calories. Times and details tbc.

Weekend 13/14 September - 2* Kayak course
2* Kayaking course Bradford on Avon for those who have done the 1* previously. Details nearer the time.

Monday 15 Sept - WASC meeting, 78 Portway
To set the WASC plans for the next season. Any new ideas welcome, please send to the secretary or call on 01985 300139.

Friday 19 September - Caving or Climbing
Dependent on the weather. Watch this space but expect to leave Warminster around 6:15pm if you want to join the convoy.

Sat 27 September - Gliding Day
A chance to get airborne in a sport glider. Some costs but well worth it. Essential to book in advance by contacting the chairman.

October

Saturday 11 October - Seaside weekend
Some combination of sand, sea, surf and anything else we can think of, all based in tents on the Gower penisula.

Wednesday 15 October - Night Bike Ride
Night bike ride on Salisbury plain tracks, something very different! Leave 78 Portway at 6pm.


Friday 17 October - Indoor Climbing
Leave 78 Portway, Warminster around 6:15pm most probably Swindon Link Centre climbing wall.

Saturday 18 October - Zip Wire
A Zip Wire will be set up over a local lake. Great fun, zip down the wire and drop in the lake. Bring wetsuit or borrow a WASC one. Meet at 20A Westbury Road, Warminster at 9am.

Friday 24 October - Beginner/Intermediate Caving
This will be a caving session that is suitable for children and adults who are new to caving. It will probably be to one of the Burrington Combe caves. Meet 78 Portway at 6.15pm. Bring wellies.

November

Saturday 1 November - Firework Party
Another spectacular pyrotechnic display from Bill & Becki Fryer. Live music and food, bring food/drink and a great time to be had by all. 78 Portway at 7pm.

Friday 14 November - Indoor Climbing
Leave 78 Portway, Warminster around 6:15pm, most probably Swindon Link Centre climbing wall.

Friday 21 November - Intermediate Caving
This will be a wet session in a cave with a streamway called Swildon's Hole. Prepare to get wet and knackered but it's worth it. Leave 78 Portway at 6.15pm. Bring wellies and Mars bars.

Saturday 22 November - River Frome Kayak Trip
A trip down the river Frome lasting approx half a day, bring snacks, i.e cakes for Darren, mars bars and any other sweets. Suitable for anyone who can handle a kayak, i.e 1* or better standard.

Tuesday 25 November - Planning Meeting
Planning meeting at 78 Portway, Warminster (biscuits provided) all welcome. Meet at 7.30pm.

December

Saturday 6 December - Ballistics day
Guns, fire and anything else we can lay our hands on. Politically incorrect but who cares. In a field near Bath. Bring snacks. Leave 78 Portway, Warminster at 9.30am or go direct to "the field".

Friday 12 December - Indoor Climbing
Leave 78 Portway, Warminster around 6:15pm, most probably Swindon Link Centre climbing wall.

Friday 19 December - Christmas Party
Another WASC spectacular for your diary. Celebrate the past year with the WASC. 78 Portway at 7.30pm, bring snacks and drinks.

Saturday 27 December - Salisbury Plain Mountain Biking
Work off christmas with a family-friendly mountain bike ride across Salisbury Plain. Meet at 78 Portway 09:00am.

Tuesday 30 December - Caving
This will be a caving session that is suitable for all. More WASC Christmas fun, meet 78 Portway at 08:30am . Bring wellies, caving gear available.
